Sandiwara to Premiere at Berlin Film Festival, Michelle Yeoh Plays Five Roles in Malaysian Night Market Film
A first look has been released for Sandiwara, a new short film directed by Academy Award–winning filmmaker Sean Baker and starring Academy Award–winning Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh.
The film is scheduled to premiere on 20 February 2026 at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Set in a Malaysian night market, the story unfolds entirely within the same active public space. Crowded walkways, food stalls, and constant foot traffic form the backdrop as different characters move through the environment.
Michelle Yeoh appears in five separate roles, each navigating the same night market setting from different perspectives. The shared location functions as the central space where the characters intersect.
Inspired by his time in Penang, Malaysia, Sean Baker wrote, directed, shot, and edited the film as part of a Self-Portrait Residency project.
At the time of announcement, details on runtime and wider distribution have not been released.
