When RM5.90 Breakfast Starts Making More Sense Than Everything Else

Image
It’s about surviving your mornings, saving time and energy, and making small choices that actually matter. RM5.90 for breakfast isn’t just a price. It might be the only small win you get before the day starts taking from you. The most expensive part of breakfast isn’t the money. It’s the mental load . Planning, prepping, cleaning, and maintaining basic appliances like a fridge, microwave, or coffee setup can take more energy than the meal itself. For working adults, time, energy, and ongoing commitments often matter more than taste. Most mornings, choices are limited. Convenience stores, a nearby hawker, or fast food if driving is possible are the options that actually work. Accessibility matters more than ideal routines or perfect meals. List of 7-Eleven Malaysia 7Cafe Sandwiches Menu. List of 7-Eleven Malaysia 7Cafe Sandwiches Menu. Normally, I don’t expect surprises from 7-Eleven Malaysia. In places like Thailand, 7-Eleven has set a much higher bar, but locally it has mostly been ...

A RM1,800 “Sultan” Kek Lapis Is Turning Sarawak’s Famous Cake Into A Luxury Dessert

Image
A traditional slice of Sarawak kek lapis usually costs just a few ringgit. But one ultra-premium version is now drawing attention for a very different reason: its price tag . A special creation known as Kek Lapis Sultan is reportedly selling for RM1,800 (around US$380–420) for a single whole cake, turning one of Malaysia’s most recognisable festive desserts into something closer to a luxury confection . The cake comes from Sarawak , a region famous for its intricate layer cakes. Unlike most desserts, kek lapis is made by baking one thin layer at a time and stacking them carefully to build the dense structure and colourful patterns. The process alone can take hours. This particular version takes it further with premium ingredients such as pistachios, hazelnut praline, chocolate, and high-quality butter , giving the traditional kuih a much richer profile than the everyday versions people are used to seeing during festive seasons. The price may sound shocking at first, but break...

Rice Dumpling (Zongzi): Saving the Gold for Last

Image
The first time you hold a Rice Dumpling, or Zongzi, there is a brief pause. It is tightly wrapped in bamboo leaves, tied with string, sealed at every angle. There is no visible filling and no obvious starting point. For a moment, you are not entirely sure how to approach it. Also known as a Chinese glutinous rice dumpling traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, Zongzi appears simple from the outside. Then you unwrap it. Steam escapes. The rice is compact and glossy, faintly sweet from the leaf and carrying the sheen of melted pork fat. You are not tasting. You are hunting for the gold. Pork belly appears first, dark and collapsing at the edges, its fat already melting into the surrounding grains. Mushroom follows, soaked in soy and deep with savoury notes. The rice clings together between your chopsticks, warm and steady. But the salted egg yolk is still hidden. Image via  @ WokStreetChina You ease the bundle open just enough to see inside. And there it is. Golden. Den...
